Miscarriages May Be a Symptom of Greater Health Risk

Miscarriage is a painful and, unfortunately, common event, occurring in a reported 20 percent of all pregnancies. Multiple miscarriages, defined as three or more successive losses, are both traumatic and a symptom of greater health risk, according to the experts at Repromedix, a specialty infertility testing lab in Massachusetts. Approximately 7 of every 1,000 women who become pregnant will experience multiple miscarriages, known medically as Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL).

New Moms Breastfeeding in Record Numbers, Yet Many Stop By Three Months, Survey Reveals
ALEXANDRIA, Va., June 20, 2005
It's been well-documented for quite some time that breastfeeding is beneficial to babies and mothers, offering many protective health benefits. These range from providing the essential nutrients and antibodies babies need to develop physically and neurologically, to lowering a mother's risk of certain cancers. So why do so many women stop breastfeeding before the recommended 12 months? According to a new national survey, the top reasons why new mothers stopped breastfeeding were they felt like they were not producing enough milk (47%), followed by difficulties getting the baby to latch on (33%) and work-related issues (29%).

With women initiating approximately 70- 75% of all divorces, "Women's Infidelity" author Michelle Langley believes the answer is a resounding "no." Langley contends women frequently pursue separations and divorces under the guise of "searching for self"; however, she states the real reason is often another man. Langley says it's not uncommon for women to be happily married prior to having affairs. At the "Era of Hope" Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program meeting, researchers funded through this program will present innovative studies that offer a glimpse into the array of research currently being done on the prevention, detection, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Studies presented at the meeting explore topics such as the development of a hand-held device to allow for at-home screening for breast cancer; the role of exercise in restoring the immune system after chemotherapy; and correlating genetic changes in normal-looking tissues near breast tumors with risk of recurrence.

Over Four Percent of Pregnant Women Used Illicit Drugs in Past Month
WASHINGTON, June 2, 2005
Over four percent of pregnant women ages 15 to 44 used illicit drugs during the past month, according to new data released today by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The data show that pregnant women ages 15 to 25 were more likely to use illicit drugs than pregnant women ages 26 to 44.

Knowing More About 'What's Inside' Birth Control Pills May Help Increase Compliance
MONTVILLE, N.J., June 1, 2005
A new national survey reveals women pay much more attention to what's inside their food and clothing than what's inside their birth control pills. The survey was conducted in February 2005 by International Communications Research (ICR) of 400 women between the ages of 18 - 35 who are currently using, or have ever used, birth control pills. As many as 74 percent of women know what's inside their food and 60 percent know what's inside their clothing, but only 15 percent of women know what's inside their birth control pills(1a,b,c).

SEVERITY OF SLEEP APNEA AND RELATED BLOOD PRESSURE LEVELS MAY INCREASE IN LATE PREGNANCY
WESTCHESTER, Ill. May 27, 2005
Women in the third trimester of pregnancy may experience an increase in the severity of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and associated blood pressure levels, according to a study in the June 1 issue of the journal SLEEP. The study shows that the severity of OSA is much higher in women during late pregnancy than it is after they have given birth. This includes an increased number of pauses in breathing, reduced oxygen saturation levels, and approximately two times as many arousals from sleep. While results also show that overall blood pressure levels during sleep are only moderately elevated in late pregnancy, these levels fluctuate severely due to the cycles of pauses in breathing.

Organ Donor's Mom Travels 2,000 Miles to Detroit to Meet Grateful Recipients
May 26, 2005
Elizabeth Rosario of Puerto Rico will travel to Detroit to meet two transplant recipients who have helped ease some of the pain of losing her son. Jose Angel Ortiz Rosario, 29, was critically injured when his motorcycle was struck by a car at a Detroit stop sign last November. A few days later he died but his heart, kidneys, pancreas and liver continue to give life to others.
